Muirfield is a links golf course located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. The course is considered one of the most prestigious and challenging in the world, and is a regular host of the Open Championship, one of golf's four major tournaments.
Muirfield was designed by Old Tom Morris and first opened for play in 1891. The course has undergone several renovations and redesigns over the years, most notably by Harry Colt in the 1920s, and more recently by Martin Hawtree in 2016. The course measures 7,245 yards from the championship tees and has a par of 71.
One of the defining characteristics of Muirfield is its undulating terrain, which offers a variety of shot-making options and challenges for golfers. The course is also known for its fast and firm greens, which require precision and skill to navigate. The fairways are generally wide and open, but are also lined with thick rough and bunkers that can make for difficult recovery shots.
Another notable feature of Muirfield is its 16th hole, known as "The Short," which is a par 3 measuring just 123 yards. Despite its short length, the hole is considered one of the most challenging on the course, as it requires a precise tee shot to a small, well-bunkered green.
Muirfield has a rich history and has been host to many memorable moments in golf. It has hosted the Open Championship 16 times, most recently in 2013 when Phil Mickelson won the tournament. The course also hosted the Ryder Cup in 1973 and the Walker Cup in 1979.
Muirfield is also the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, founded in 1744. The Club is a private members club and only members and their guests can play the course.
In 2016, Muirfield became the first Open Championship course to host the tournament after a change in its policy on female members, ending a one-year ban by the R&A. The ban was imposed after members voted against allowing female members in 2016.
Overall, Muirfield is considered one of the most iconic and challenging golf courses in the world, and its rich history and prestigious reputation make it a must-play for any serious golfer.
