Old Works Golf Club is a unique golf course located in Anaconda, Montana. Designed by renowned golfer Jack Nicklaus, the course is nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and offers golfers a challenging and rewarding experience. What sets Old Works apart from other golf courses is its history and the unique way in which it was constructed.
The land on which Old Works now stands was once home to one of the largest copper smelters in the world. The smelter operated for nearly a century and left the land heavily polluted with toxic waste. In the 1980s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated the site as a Superfund cleanup site and began the process of cleaning up the land.
In 1994, Jack Nicklaus was approached by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the former owner of the smelter, to design a golf course on the reclaimed land. Nicklaus saw the potential in the site and agreed to take on the project. He worked closely with the EPA to ensure that the site was safe for golfers and that the construction of the course would not disturb the remaining pollution on the site.
The construction of Old Works was a massive undertaking, and the course was built entirely on top of the reclaimed land. The design of the course incorporated many of the features of traditional Scottish links courses, including rolling hills, deep bunkers, and large greens. The course also includes several water hazards, which were created by diverting water from the nearby Warm Springs Creek.
Old Works officially opened in 1997 and quickly became one of the most highly-regarded golf courses in Montana. The course has hosted several major tournaments over the years, including the Montana State Amateur Championship and the Montana Open Championship. Golfers come from all over the world to play at Old Works, and many consider it to be one of the best courses in the country.
In addition to its unique history and challenging design, Old Works also offers stunning views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. The course is situated in a valley, and golfers are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding peaks as they play. The course is also home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, and a variety of bird species.
Old Works Golf Club is more than just a golf course – it is a testament to the power of environmental restoration and the ingenuity of golf course designers. The course serves as a reminder that even the most polluted and degraded landscapes can be transformed into beautiful and valuable assets with the right vision and investment. Whether you are a seasoned golfer or a casual player, Old Works is an experience not to be missed.
